1.1 Background of the Study
Gender equality is a key principle of human rights and social justice, advocating for equal treatment, opportunities, and responsibilities for both men and women. In northern Nigeria, including Bauchi State, deeply entrenched cultural norms often place women in subordinate roles within society, limiting their access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities (Aminu & Bashir, 2024). Despite the challenges, Hausa films (often produced in the Kannywood industry) have begun to explore themes of gender equality, portraying women in leadership roles, fighting for their rights, and challenging societal norms (Sani & Haruna, 2023).
In Dass Local Government Area, where patriarchal structures are predominant, Hausa films have the potential to change public perceptions and inspire shifts toward more gender-equitable societies. By highlighting women's voices, roles, and struggles, these films can contribute to a more inclusive narrative and empower women in rural communities (Yusuf & Tijani, 2023).
This study examines the role of Hausa films in promoting gender equality in Dass, evaluating their effectiveness in challenging traditional gender norms and encouraging a shift in the societal understanding of gender roles.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing presence of gender equality narratives in Hausa films, their impact on traditional communities such as Dass remains unclear. This study seeks to assess how effectively Hausa films address gender equality issues and the extent to which they influence local perceptions and behaviors toward gender roles (Aliyu, 2024).
